War Maul and the Role of Clerics in Teamplay
I’m curious about the effectiveness of the War Maul and the role of clerics within a three-person group. In my experience, it often feels like as a cleric, I’m a secondary frontline participant who occasionally steps into the fray for a few hits. Most of the time, my focus is on healing, shielding, and supporting with spells.
I’ve been attempting to engage more actively in melee combat, and the War Maul seemed like the ideal weapon for this purpose. However, every time I’ve tried to wield it, I struggle to avoid accidentally hitting my teammates due to its wide swings. Tight spaces also exacerbate the issue. It appears that there are limited scenarios where the War Maul is effective, and these often coincide with moments where I should be focusing on healing or buffing. This kind of problem always makes me lose matches at critical moments and lose tons of Dark and Darker gold and gear.
Clerics seem to fulfill a role similar to bards within a team, but bards have weapons like crossbows that complement their position well. In contrast, clerics are left with the option of using the War Maul, which doesn’t quite align with the support-oriented playstyle. While pocket mauling can work, it doesn’t feel as optimal as the heals that clerics bring to the table.
I wonder if there’s a potential solution, perhaps by decreasing the healing capabilities slightly while enhancing the frontline potential for clerics. Or maybe I’m simply not skilled enough to manage this effectively. I’m genuinely curious to hear what others think about this.
I’m interested in finding a balance between healing and active participation in fights. Currently, it feels challenging to contribute more directly without sacrificing the crucial healing aspect, which is essential for the team’s survival.
As a suggestion, I’d recommend avoiding the War Maul when in a group due to its wide swings that risk friendly fire. The mace or morningstar could be better suited for team fights, as their overhead attacks are more precise. Additionally, consider the use of shields, as they can provide excellent defensive capabilities in group scenarios.
When choosing to enter the frontline, look for opportune moments where enemies are distracted, allowing you to join the combat. However, make sure your buffs are active before taking on any risky actions. The shield spell, in particular, can greatly enhance both your survivability and that of your team.
Ultimately, finding the right balance between healing and frontline engagement is crucial, and experimenting with different approaches can lead to a more rewarding experience.
